How to Choose Outfits for Your Session

A simple guide from a Northern Michigan photographer

Choosing outfits should feel simple. As a Traverse City photographer, I see one thing over and over: the best photos come from people who feel comfortable and confident in what they’re wearing. Here’s how to make that happen.

1. Stick to neutral colors

Neutrals always photograph clean and timeless, especially in Northern Michigan’s natural light. Think creams, tans, whites, muted greens, and denim. These tones play well with forests, beaches, dunes, and downtown Traverse City backdrops.

2. Keep patterns minimal

Solid colors or subtle textures like linen or knit always look better than busy prints. Northern Michigan locations already have a strong visual presence, so simple clothing keeps the focus on you.

3. Match the vibe of the location

Where you shoot matters.

City spots in Traverse City: structured outfits with clean lines.

Beaches or dunes: flowy pieces and soft tones.

Woods and fields: earthy palettes that blend into the environment.

A well-matched outfit helps the whole session feel cohesive.

4. Coordinate, don’t match

For couples and families, aim for outfits that share a palette instead of wearing identical pieces. Think two or three tones everyone can pull from. This keeps your photos intentional without feeling staged.

5. Choose pieces with movement

Flowy dresses, layers, and fabrics with some drape look amazing with Northern Michigan’s constant breeze. Movement adds depth and makes your images feel alive.

6. Wear something comfortable

If it feels awkward, it looks awkward. Pick clothes you can move in easily. Confidence always photographs better than anything else.

7. Skip big logos

Large branding or graphics can distract from the moment and make your photos look dated fast. Clean pieces keep everything timeless.

8. Bring a backup outfit

Lighting and locations change fast, especially around the lakeshore. Having a second outfit gives you flexibility if something suddenly feels off or the weather shifts.

9. Add layers or simple accessories

Jackets, sweaters, or subtle jewelry can add dimension without overpowering the shot. Accessories should complement, not dominate.

10. Wear what feels like you

Whether your session is in downtown Traverse City, on the beach, or somewhere in Northern Michigan’s woods, the best photos come from authenticity. Choose outfits that reflect your style, just elevated a bit.
